Chapter 6 VECTORS

MAGNITUDE OF A VECTOR

Given that a vector a=xi+yj, the magnitude of a denoted |a| is given by;

a=x2+y2

Example: Given that a=-23and b=11. Find:

  1. |a|
  2. |3b|
  3. |a+b|

Solution

  1. a=-23   a=(-2)2+32=4+9=13

a=13  units

  1. b=11, Þ3b=311=33

3b=33

3b=32+32=9+9=18

3b=18 units

  1. a+b=-14

a+b=(-1)2+42=1+16

1+16=17

a+b=17 units
