CHAPTER 1 : THE U.P.C

ORGANISATION OF THE UPC
  • The structure of the party made provisions for a party congress, which had to take place annually to review the activities of the party and elect members of the central executive committee.
  • The party had the Central executive Committee in charge of implementation of the party resolutions.
  • There was the secretariat in charge of the day to day running of the party.
  • They had the treasury which kept the financial contributions and donations from within and outside French Cameroon, from friendly socialist parties and leftist organisations.
  • The party had so many sub organs such as les Amis du Progress in Yaounde, the Committee Feminin de L’UPC, and the Jeunesse Democratique Cameroonaise, etc
  • It had the propaganda section such as a monthly Newspaper-voix du people du Cameroon, a bimonthly-lumiere,a weekly –l’ Etoile and a Youth Bulletin- la verite.
  • The party worked in close collaboration with traditional organisations such as the ngondo of the Douala, the Kumze of the Bamileke,and the Union Tribale Bamtou of the Bulu. Unfortunately the French intimidations and bribes forced these organisations to switch from the UPC to the BDC sponsored by the French.
  • The party was in alliance with Trade Unions such as USCC.
  • The party also worked in collaboration with the French Confederation of trade Unions, the French socialist and Communist Parties, the Socialists or Communist regimes in china Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Ghana and Guinea.
  • The party established military bases in the bush and smuggled arms from the Communist Bloc, and launched guerrilla War against the French and their supporters.
