SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS

Political

  • Most countries have adopted an independent electoral code to handle the problems of electoral malpractices, invitation of European observers and the refusal of the westem industrialised countries to recognise military coups.
  • Most organised sovereign national conferences, and produced new constitution reflecting local realities.
  • To promote national integration. Most have adopted a unitary or federal system, with powers given to the central government to tackle the problems of the minority. Minorities have been given key positions in the government.
  • Most have allowed human rights organisation to function in order to protect civil liberties.

Social

  • Adoption of free education by some African countries, provision of subsidized texbooks, and improvement of the training and status of teachers, UNESCO has been helping to fight against illiteracy and ignorance.
  • Creation of corporation in charge of electricity supply
  • Creation of corporations in charge of water supplies, encouragement of local water committee project.
  • Family planning campaigns have helped to reduce the birth rate.
  • The improvement of telephone service, adequate planning of streets and houses, reinforcement of police control has helped to reduce the crime waves in cities.

Economic

  • As regard low income and productivity.
  • External assistance from the UN financial institutions
  • To solve the problems of dumping, the government imposed high taxes on imports, and lauched a strong campaign for the consumption of domestic products.
  • The development inter-state transport and regional organisation has contributed to promote inter African trade.
