COURSE OF THE CONGO CRISIS AND THE ROLE OF THE UNO
  • Patrice Lumumba, the prime Minister appealed to the UN for assistance.
  • The UN sent peacekeeping forces selected from the small neutral Asian and African countries.
  • UN forces were not willing to assist Lumumba directly
  • Lumumba turned to the Soviet Union for military which annoyed the USA and the West.
  • As a consequence, USA plotted the overthrow of Lumumba.
  • In January 1961, Lumumba was killed
