CHAPTER 5 : CIVIL WARS

THE CASE OF BELGIAN CONGO - ORIGINS
  • The Belgian Colonial policy of paternalism transformed Congo to an exploitative ground neglecting development that will enable the Congolese to run their affairs.
  • Strong regionalism in Congo. Formation of mostly regional parties like alliance des bakongo (ABAKO) BY Joseph kassavubu, Confederation des Association de Katanga (CONAKAT) by Moise tshombe.
  • Professor Van Bilsen’s publication titled: thirty years plan for political emancipation of the Belgian Congo which envisaged independence in 1985 caused anger.
  • The anti-colonial riots in Leopoldville in 1959 causing material and human destructions accelerated Belgium’s move towards independence without sound preparations.
  • Implementation of democracy without training the Congolese on democratic principles was bound to cause chaos.
  • On June 30 th 1960 Belgium granted independence without reconciling the factions, the civilians and army, the federalists and those in favour of unitary state, the president and the Prime minister.
