It influenced the reluctance of USA and Belgium to assist Patrice Lumumba suppress the secession of Katanga.
It led to the brutal killing of Patrice Lumumba in 1961
It helped to sustain the brutal authoritarian rule of General Joseph Mobutu. Which deprived people of civil liberties, did mass killings etc.

It retarded the development of Congo because of over dependency on Belgium and France
