II. Reasons for the Neo colonialism
  • The Belgian, French and Americans wanted to protect their economic interest, especially investments in the mining companies, plantations, trade etc.
  • To increase their level of investments
  • To continue to provide skilled labour
  • To help reduce widespread poverty
  • To put an end to the pro socialist and Russian policies of Patrice Lumumba
  • To prevent communist infiltration and Russian influence.
  • To provide peace and stability

                Negatives effects

  • It influenced the reluctance of USA and Belgium to assist Patrice Lumumba suppress the secession of Katanga.
  • It led to the brutal killing of Patrice Lumumba in 1961
  • It helped to sustain the brutal authoritarian rule of General Joseph Mobutu. Which deprived people of civil liberties, did mass killings etc.
  • It led to brain drain especially to Belgium
  • It retarded the development of Congo because of over dependency on Belgium and France
  • It led to heavy exploitation of Congolese resources by the French, Belgians and Americans
  • It led to capital flight especially to Belgium

Positive effects

  • It influenced African states to create the OAU in 1963 to defend the territorial integrity of Africa.
  • It led to political stability under general Mobutu between 1965 and 2002
  • It prevented the growth of communism in congo
  • It made available good technocrats who ran the civil service and economic
