7.2 AFRICAN UNION
  1. WHY AFRICAN UNION WAS CREATED

Social-political reason

  • It was inspired by the successes of the transformation of European Economic Community to the European Union.
  • To accelerate political unity in Africa
  • To accelerate international cooperation and solidarity of the Africans in international affairs.
  • To accelerate the eradication of imperialism and Neo Colonialism in Africa
  • For better maintain peace in Africa and the defense of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the African states.

Economic reasons

  • To ease the establishment of a common African currency.
  • To protect African trade and increase the volume of African trade in and out of Africa.
  • To ease economic integration in Africa and the development of good transport infrastructures linking the African states.
  • For better provision of jobs and the reduction of poverty in Africa.

  • AU accelerated democratization in Africa

  1. Failures to achieve political union of African states or united states of Africa
  2. Inability to persuade members established genuine democratic institutions.
  3. Inability to defend the sovereignty of African states
  4. International trade between African states is lower than between African states and their former colonial masters.
