CHAPTER 4

THE ELECTORAL PROCESS/ ORGANISATION OF ELECTIONS IN CAMEROON

The electorial process in Cameroon is also known as the manifestation of Franchise.

                        Since 2012, elections in Cameroon is organized by ELECAM. Before the year 2003, elections in Cameroon were organized by the Minister of territorial administration, which had always favoured the government.

            It was opposed by the opposition parties. In 2000, the national Elections Observatory(NEO) was created to over see the electoral process. However it had no power since it was only an observer of elections.

                        ELECAM had more authority as it is incharge  of organizing and ensuring free fair and transparent election as an independent body.

            The following are the main stages in the Cameroon electoral process;

  • Voters registration.
  • Compilation of voters registered
  • Choice and registration of candidates
  • Convening of the electorate
  • Political rallies and campagns
  • Production of ballot papers and other polling materials
  • The voting process
  • Counting of votes and forwarding result.
  • Announcement of results
