DENTITION IN MAMMALS

Mammals has four different types of teeth

  1. Incisor: it is use for bitting and cutting large pieces of food and are found in front of the mouth.
  2. Canines: They are larger than the incisors and use for seizing prey and tearing flesh and are very prominent in dogs.
  3. Pre-molar: It is use for chewing food and also use for tearing bones and flesh.
  4. Molar: They function same as the pre-molars but they are the last set of teeth to come out and are called wisdom teeth. Mammals has two set of teeth in their life time.
  5. Milk or deciduous teeth: Which arrive when the animal is still young.
  6. Permanent teeth: It last throughout the animals life.

DENTAL FORMULAR

                                                           This is the number types and arrangement of teeth present in one half of the lower and the upper jaw of the particular mammal. It can be presented by an equation.
