CHAPTER 1 : NUTRITION

HOW IS THE ILEUM ADAPTED TO CARRY OUT IT ADAPTING FUNCTION
  • The ileum is long and has a large surface area for absorption.
  • The walls are covered with numerous microvilli and villi which increases the surface area for absorption.
  • It contains thin layers of epithelium which facilitate absorption
  • It secret mucus which facilitate of movement of undigested food to give way to absorption.
  • It is highly vascularize with blood vessels and lymphatic vessels which carry out absorb food to the level while the lymphatic(lacteal lipid)

The Large Intestine (Colon  or rectum)

The must important function in the colon is that of water absorption from undigested residues. Faeces is pass into the rectum and is send out at interferes through the anus the large intestine contain no enzymes but bacteria in the colon that digest part of the fibers produces vitamins like Vitamin K, vitamin B12.

ASSIMILATION

This is the use of digested food by cell of the body most cells are avle to metabolism and absorb, glucose fat and amino acid. Excess glucose is converted by the hormone insulin, glucagon. Which is store in the liver and muscles. When the amount of glucose is low glycogine is converted back to glucose by the pancreas.
