CONJUGAISON

LE PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Pour conjuguer un verbe au past perfect continuous tense,  on conjugue l’auxiliaire avoir « to have » au past simple  « had », plus le past participle de l’auxiliaire être « to be », « been » et le participe présent du verbe à conjuguer en ajoutant le « ing » à la fin du verbe.

NB :

L’on peut écrire had not ou hadn’t (forme contractée)

I had been waiting

I had not been waiting

You had been waiting

She had been waiting

Had she been waiting ?

She had not been waiting

It had been waiting

Had it been waiting ?

La valeur d’emploi du past perfect continuous tense

On emploie le past perfect continuous tense pour :

  1. Dire pendant combien de temps un certain évènement durait avant qu’un autre ne se produise. Mais ces deux événements se situent dans le passé.

Ex : They had been waiting for 1 hour when the train arrived (ils avaient attendu pendant une heure quand le train arriva).

EXERCICE

 

Use the past perfect continuous tense to conjugate those following verbs.

 

  1. Tina needed a break because she (to study)…………………………all morning.
  2. Jeanne (to learn)……………………………………………..Japanese for 10 years before she moved to Japan.
  3. I did not go to the party last night because I (to work)………………all day.
  4. He felt fit for the race because he (to train)………………………….a lot.
  5. When I went to see Mrs ACHONCHA, her colleague told me that she (to speak)…………………………………….on the phone for two hours.
  6. You got sick because you (to eat)……………………….the whole time.
  7. The singer (to live) …………………………………………………in this town for ten years when he moved to Paris.
  8. After you left, I ……………………………(to type) for more than two hours in the office;
  9. The girls ……………………………………… (To move) to this place for long.
