Chap2: Number patterns

Elementary sequences

DEFINITION:  A sequence is a set of numbers written in a special and well defined order.

Ex a) 2,4,6,8,10, …  b) 3,5,7,9,11, …  c) 1,3,6,10,15, …  d)2,3,5,7,11,13, …

The dots at the end of the numbers show that the sequence can be continued as far as possible. From the examples above we can say that

a) is a set of even numbers, b) is a set of odd numbers, c) is a set of triangular numbers, d) is the set of prime numbers

Each member of a sequence is called a term. For example, 4 is the second term of the set of even numbers. The order of the sequence is called rule of the sequence.
