Chap7: triangles

Finding one side of a right-angled triangle using Pythagoras theorem

      A

     b                              c

     C               a                        B

From Pythagoras theorem

(AB)2 = (AC)2 = (BC)2

c2 = a2 + b2

where a, b and c are lengths of the sides AB, BC and AC.

Ex: find a

3                              5

                            a

Solution:

From c2 = a2 + b2, 52 = 32 + a2

a2 = 25-9 = 16 = 4, a = 4
